IU opens up about her songwriting struggles, “Vague lyrics can cause misinterpretations and unintentional hurt”

IU recently gave fans a glimpse into her songwriting process.

On March 24th, the YouTube channel ‘BDNS‘ uploaded a video titled ‘Forever Waiting For You with IU’.

In the video, IU, fresh off her latest concert, joined MC Moon Sang Hoon for a heart-to-heart conversation.

Moon Sang Hoon kicked off the chat by expressing his curiosity about IU‘s lyrics, asking, “When you’re putting your worldview into words or lyrics, do you ever find yourself adjusting the intensity?”

IU responded, “As I continue to write lyrics over time, I feel like I’m getting trained.” She added, “I’ve noticed that certain expressions resonate more with people.”

She further explained, “Using vague expressions can sometimes lead to misunderstandings, and I’ve learned that it can unintentionally hurt someone. I think I’m gradually learning this through experience.”

Reacting to this, Moon Sang Hoon shared his admiration for the Korean language and its use in lyrics.

He then asked, “Don’t you think that Korean Uaenas (IU’s fan club) can better appreciate the subtle nuances of the lyrics without needing a translation?”

IU agreed, saying, “Absolutely. When you translate Korean, many times the unique flavor of the language doesn’t come across. That’s because there are many expressions that are unique to our country.”

In the meantime, IU also shared her secret to maintaining a healthy mindset. She said, “Apart from when I’m working, there’s not much room for ‘IU’ when I’m meeting friends or going out. I think I’m doing a good job of keeping things separate and living a healthy life.”
