Controversy Arises as (G)I-DLE‘s Miyeon Faces Criticism from Online Feminist Community
On June 4th, an online community post titled “Miyeon seems to be obsessed with male idols” sparked a heated debate among netizens.
The term “male idols” in this context carries a derogatory connotation, implying an excessive fixation on male celebrities.
Miyeon has been actively involved in filming “challenge videos” as part of promotional activities for (G)I-DLE, showcasing their latest songs and captivating choreography, which has garnered attention and popularity among fellow artists.
Miyeon has collaborated in challenge videos with prominent groups such as NCT, Winner, Kai, TOMORROW X TOGETHER, and others, further expanding their exposure and promotional efforts.
Presently, Miyeon also holds the position of an MC on Mnet’s popular music show “M Countdown,” leading to speculations that she may have received requests to participate in challenges from various singers.
However, certain members of the feminist community voiced their concerns, suggesting that Miyeon appears to selectively engage in challenges primarily involving male idols.
In a notable instance, one internet user expressed their discontent by juxtaposing images of Miyeon alongside male idols participating in challenge videos, highlighting their disapproval.
Thankfully, not all netizens responded negatively to Miyeon‘s involvement in challenges.
Some argued, “Isn’t it common for artists to engage in challenges when promoting new songs? There’s nothing wrong with Miyeon participating. It’s unfair to label her as obsessed with male idols,” while others speculated, “Perhaps those criticizing her are unfamiliar with the true meaning of ‘male idol obsession.’ This outrage seems unfounded.”
Meanwhile, (G)I-DLE, the group to which Miyeon belongs, recently unveiled their sixth mini-album titled “I Burn” on the 15th of last month, captivating fans with their latest musical offerings.
