A netizen who was previously convicted for posting a malicious comment about Han Ye Seul has now been ruled not guilty.
On March 29, legal sources revealed that the Seoul Central District Court’s Criminal Division 5-2 (Presiding Judge Kim Yong Joong) overturned the conviction of netizen A, who was on trial for allegedly insulting Han Ye Seul in an online comment.
Back in July 2021, A left a comment on an article discussing rumors about Han Ye Seul’s boyfriend, who was accused of having ties to an entertainment bar.
Han Ye Seul took legal action, accusing A of defamation. The comment reportedly read, “This is why punks and delinquents don’t work out. Act your age. What are you doing at 40?”
At first, A was fined 300,000 KRW through a summary indictment. However, A challenged the ruling, arguing that the comment was not directly aimed at Han Ye Seul and did not contain offensive language strong enough to damage her reputation.
In the first trial, the Seoul Central District Court’s Criminal Division 16 (Presiding Judge Lee Kyung Sun) upheld the 300,000 KRW fine. But things changed during the appeal.
The second trial ruled in A’s favor, stating that the comment did not go beyond general criticism and was not excessively malicious or directly slanderous toward Han Ye Seul. As a result, the court overturned the previous ruling and found A not guilty.
Since the prosecution did not appeal further, the verdict is now final.
