Singer Hwang Ga Ram brought tears to the eyes of Yoo Jae Suk and Jo Se Ho with her deeply emotional story of survival and determination.
On the February 5th episode of tvN's You Quiz on the Block, Hwang Ga Ram opened up about the struggles she faced while living on the streets for 147 days, and how she found hope through music.
She shared that after coming to Seoul to pursue her dream of becoming a musician, she ended up homeless. "I started by busking at Hongdae Playground and would sleep on benches to save money," she explained. She continued, "My life on the streets began there. I slept on cardboard near a chimney or in bathrooms where I could find heat."

Hwang Ga Ram revealed that she lost weight down to just 40kg and was covered in mange. "I cried a lot, thinking I might die. Music was my only focus,” she said. Despite the hardships, she practiced singing while doing early-morning deliveries, even working on her high notes while crossing bridges, surrounded by passing subways and cars.
Desperate for a space to practice, she rented a warehouse, even though it wasn't meant for living. "I’d bring things from the street and made it work," she said, before smiling and sharing, "I eventually joined the band Pinocchio after overcoming a 300:1 competition rate."
Sadly, just three months later, COVID-19 hit, and all performances were canceled. Hwang Ga Ram admitted, "I really thought about quitting. It was so tough. I often felt like I was nothing."
However, her music and resilience kept her going, and she performed a live version of I Am a Firefly, a song that reflects her incredible journey. The powerful lyrics moved Yoo Jae Suk and Jo Se Ho to tears.
Yoo Jae Suk, visibly emotional, shared, “The lyrics feel like our story. I tried not to cry, but tears just came."
Hwang Ga Ram’s performance was a reminder of how far she’s come, and her story of strength and hope continues to inspire.
