Song Hye Kyo opened up about the intense preparation she went through for her role in the upcoming film Dark Nuns.
At a press screening for the movie held on January 20th at Megabox Coex in Gangnam, Seoul, the actress shared her personal journey of learning to smoke for the role of Sister Unia. T
he event also saw the attendance of the director, Kwon Hyuk Jae, and co-stars Jeon Yeo Bin, Lee Jin Wook, and Moon Woo Jin.
Dark Nuns is a gripping story about a forbidden ritual to save a young boy possessed by a dangerous evil spirit, and Song Hye Kyo’s character is determined to do whatever it takes to save him.
On the day of the screening, the actress admitted she was nervous but excited about the film. She said, “I’m so nervous. It was a movie I worked hard on, so I hope there will be a good reaction."
However, it wasn’t just the complex storyline that had Song Hye Kyo worried. It was also her character’s smoking habit, something the actress had never done before.
She explained, “It was my first time acting while smoking. I had a lot of concerns. Since I'm a non-smoker, I wondered how I should handle it, but when I thought about the character of Sister Unia, it was a necessary part.”
In an effort to make her portrayal as realistic as possible, Song Hye Kyo revealed, “I practiced smoking for six months before filming. The first scene starts with smoking, and it’s a big close-up, so I didn’t want to fake it. During the filming, I practiced acting a lot, but I also practiced smoking a lot.”
Fans are eagerly anticipating Dark Nuns, which will hit theaters on January 24th.
