Actor Kim Jung Hyun has finally addressed the controversy surrounding his behavior during the 2018 MBC drama The Time, issuing a heartfelt apology six years later at the 2024 KBS Drama Awards.
According to Spotv News on January 2, Kim Jung Hyun took the stage during the pre-recorded awards ceremony on December 31 to reflect on his past actions.
Back in July 2018, Kim Jung Hyun faced backlash for his behavior at the press conference for The Time. He rejected co-star Girls’ Generation’s Seohyun’s attempt to link arms and kept a cold, expressionless demeanor throughout the event.
His actions sparked criticism, and he later left the drama midway, citing health issues. Meanwhile, Seohyun stayed on and completed the series, earning praise for her professionalism.
The situation escalated when rumors emerged that Kim Jung Hyun’s then-girlfriend, actress Seo Ye Ji, had allegedly pressured him to act rudely toward Seohyun and other female staff. While both actors denied these allegations, the controversy tarnished Kim Jung Hyun’s image.
In 2021, Kim Jung Hyun issued a handwritten apology, admitting fault for the press conference incident and his early exit from the drama. He expressed regret, saying, "I wish I could undo everything. I sincerely apologize without excuses."
Now, for the first time at a public event, Kim Jung Hyun directly addressed the issue. While he didn’t name Seohyun or others involved, he said, "I’ve carried this burden in my heart for a long time. I’ve spent years reflecting deeply. I truly wanted to apologize," before bowing his head on stage.
However, fans are unsure if his speech will make it to the final broadcast. Since the KBS Drama Awards were pre-recorded, there’s a chance his comments might be edited out.
Meanwhile, other fans and other netizens felt that he was disrespectful with this matter even until the end.
This marks a significant step for Kim Jung Hyun, who has repeatedly shown remorse in interviews and statements but had yet to apologize publicly in his own voice.
Viewers are now waiting to see if his words will reach a wider audience and help close a chapter on this long-standing controversy.
