TV Chosun’s Lovers of Joseon is back, but fans aren’t feeling the excitement. Despite its return after a break, the variety show is struggling to capture attention and build buzz.
The show is a documentary-style program that offers a raw look at chaotic love stories from various couples, including unmarried men, similar to SBS's My Little Old Boy. It also features married and soon-to-be-married couples, drawing inspiration from SBS’s Same Bed, Different Dreams 2 - You Are My Destiny. But while it tries to combine elements of successful shows, Lovers of Joseon falls flat when it comes to its cast.
The show’s upcoming episode on January 6th will include new members like Lee Kyung-sil, Seo Jung-hee, and Kim Tae-won. However, there’s hardly any excitement surrounding these additions. Lee Kyung-sil has already been seen on Channel A's Dad, Where Are We Going? and MBN’s Dongchimi, where she often talks about family matters like daughters-in-law and sons. Fans can probably expect more of the same on Lovers of Joseon, and it’s hard to get excited about content they’ve already seen.

Seo Jung-hee’s love story has been widely covered in the media, but it’s not enough to spark curiosity among viewers. The show’s previous cast members include familiar faces like Sayuri from KBS2's The Return of Superman, Kim Seung-hyun from Salim Men 2, and Kim Ji-min from My Little Old Boy and Single’s Inferno. While these stars have their fans, their stories have been told over and over again, leaving little room for fresh content.
Adding to the problem, Shim Hyun-seop’s constant dating stories are starting to feel repetitive, and the long-time married couple, Lee Soo-min and Won Hyuk, along with Choi Seong-guk, haven’t brought much change to the show. Viewers were hoping for some new and exciting updates, but the show’s promise of change doesn’t seem very groundbreaking.
In comparison, SBS’s Same Bed, Different Dreams 2 keeps things fresh by rotating its cast members, often featuring couples who have recently made headlines or haven’t been seen on couple’s variety shows in a while. This strategy keeps the show interesting and ensures its longevity. Unfortunately, Lovers of Joseon doesn’t seem to follow the same successful formula, leaving fans wondering if the show can ever live up to expectations.
