• Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun Jin’s 'The Trunk' Is Trending for All the Right (or Wrong) Reasons!

Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun Jin's new Netflix series The Trunk has been making waves, but not all reactions have been positive.

The drama, which explores complex emotions and secrets, has divided audiences with its portrayal of controversial topics.

The entire season of The Trunk dropped on November 29, and viewers have been quick to share their thoughts. The story revolves around a mysterious object, The Trunk, found on a lakeshore, which brings to light hidden secrets and emotional struggles.

Seo Hyun Jin plays No In Ji, a worker for a secret marriage service called NM, where she’s on her fifth marriage to Gong Yoo’s character, Han Jung Won.

Things get complicated when Han Jung Won’s wife, Lee Seo Yeon (played by Jung Yoon Ha), also uses the NM service for her own remarriage, which leads to explicit bed scenes involving Lee Seo Yeon and another character, Yun Ji Oh (played by Jo Yi Geon).

This, combined with Seo Hyun Jin’s character marrying five times as part of her job, has caused some mixed reactions among viewers.

Some people feel that the drama is glamorizing “prostitution”, with comments like, “It’s definitely prostitution”, and “Why is this business being exposed so openly?”

Others, however, argue that the series has a deeper meaning, saying things like, “It’s pure romance”, and “I really enjoyed the redemption story”. Some viewers admitted that they felt uneasy at first but grew to appreciate the show by the end.

In a recent interview on December 6, Seo Hyun Jin acknowledged the differing opinions, saying, “I knew there would be differing opinions. People who like it would really like it, but those who don’t might find it uncomfortable. The tone is dark, and the story doesn’t offer much relief.”

Gong Yoo also addressed the controversy, sharing, “I don’t even want to talk about the wording. It was shocking. I knew it would be polarizing, and I understand that. But I see the negative reactions as coming from a small part of the audience. There’s a clear intention behind the work, and many viewers understood it that way. It’s just a matter of perspective.”

Despite the controversy, The Trunk continues to captivate audiences with its deep themes and powerful performances.

Fans of both Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun Jin have praised their acting, with many stating that the show gets better as it progresses.

  • Hyun Bin Apologizes for the 'Ddongcha' Theory After 20 Years: "I Was Wrong" - Actor Clears the Air About Iconic Role

Hyun Bin is finally addressing the long-standing "ddongcha" (poop car) theory surrounding his character from My Name is Kim Sam-soon—and he's not holding back!

In an interview on the 19th with Star News, the beloved actor confessed, "I was wrong," responding to the reevaluation of his iconic role as Hyun Jin-heon from the 2005 hit drama. The "ddongcha" theory has been a subject of online debate for years, with many viewers critiquing Hyun Jin-heon’s character as overly arrogant and entitled.

Hyun Bin, who first rose to fame in My Name is Kim Sam-soon, took the time to reflect on the character that made him a household name. He shared, “I was just following the script; there were no personal opinions added to the character of Hyun Jin-heon. At that time, I knew Hyun Jin-heon was portrayed as a ‘bad boy,’ and the way it was expressed was different from today’s standards.”

With My Name is Kim Sam-soon now being re-released as part of Wavve's "New Classic" project, fans are revisiting the 2005 drama, and the character of Hyun Jin-heon is under fresh scrutiny. Director Kim Yun-cheol even admitted that the "prince on a white horse" and "bad boy" tropes that once worked in 2005 don’t quite match today's sensibilities, leading to edits in the 2024 version.

Hyun Bin humbly acknowledged his gratitude for his successful career and hit works, saying, "It’s wonderful and I am grateful to have so many hit works. I’ve been fortunate to work with amazing writers, directors, and actors. Thanks to them, I’ve received a lot of attention and love." He also shared a sense of humility, noting, “But I never know when that luck will come again."

Despite the dramatic shift in perspective on his character, Hyun Bin’s charm and dedication remain strong. Fans are eager to see him in his upcoming film Harbin (directed by Woo Min-ho), set to be released on the 24th.
