Choi Sang Yeop of popular idol band LUCY has issued an apology after a comment he made sparked accusations of misogyny.
On December 4, Choi Sang Yeop took to the fan community platform Bubble to address the controversy.
He shared, "I learned that many people were disappointed by the words I sent through Bubble. I apologize for causing concern to those who have supported me due to my thoughtless word choice."
The controversy started when Choi Sang Yeop responded to a fan’s message about his Polaroid camera by calling it a "paper wrap." When the fan asked what "paper wrap" meant, he explained, "Polaroids come out nice, right?"
This comment quickly caught attention online, with some accusing him of using the term "paper wrap" in a way that seemed to reference the derogatory term "pee wrap," which is sometimes linked to female menstruation.
In his apology, Choi Sang Yeop clarified that his choice of words was not intended to have any harmful meaning. He said, "The word I used absolutely did not contain any other meaning or intention."
He also reflected on his mistake, adding, "I deeply reflect on the careless part and will be more cautious moving forward."
Choi Sang Yeop concluded, "Although it's somewhat late, I want to sincerely apologize to those who were disappointed. I will be more careful in the future. Once again, I sincerely apologize to all those who support me."
Choi Sang Yeop debuted with LUCY in May 2020 with their first single DEAR. The band will hold their solo concert, LUCY DAYS, at KBS Arena in Gangseo-gu, Seoul, on December 8.
