BLACKPINK member Rosé opened up about working with Bruno Mars, her creative journey, and her solo debut album during a special interview on JTBC's Newsroom broadcast on December 1.
Rosé looked radiant as she shyly sang a snippet of her collaboration with Bruno Mars, APT. The unique track was inspired by a Korean drinking game she taught her international friends while working abroad.
"I told them, 'Let me teach you this simple and fun game.' They loved it, and that’s how it turned into a song about meeting at an apartment and having fun together," she explained.
Talking about Bruno Mars, Rosé couldn’t hide her excitement. "At first, it felt surreal. He helped me a lot and inspired me. Before this interview, he told me to say, 'Bruno Mars is the best!' So here I am, saying it," she said with a laugh.
Bruno’s guidance extended beyond music. Rosé revealed he even coached her vocals for the song’s funky vibe. "He wanted me to sing with more energy and imagine I was calling out to someone far away. He joked, 'You’ve never tried to seduce anyone, have you?' It was all in good fun and really boosted my confidence," she shared.
On the music video, Rosé highlighted Bruno’s creative vision. "He’d send references, saying, 'Pink would look amazing here.' When I arrived on set, everything was pink—from the outfits to the background. It was so vivid and inspiring to see his ideas come to life."
Fans were curious about the kissing scene in the video, and Rosé had an amusing story to share. "It was Bruno’s idea! I jokingly said, 'Why do I have to do it?' There’s even a behind-the-scenes clip of me protesting. But we both agreed it fit the lyrics, and honestly, it was better for me to do it than him," she added with a laugh.
Rosé also teased her first solo full-length album, Rosie. "The name comes from what my friends and family call me. I wanted this album to feel genuine, like something that could comfort me and others," she said.
Reflecting on her growth as an artist, she admitted, "Recording studios used to intimidate me. But now, they feel like a safe space where I can pour out all my emotions."
One song on the album, inspired by her feelings about online comments, was particularly healing for her. "It was about forgiving myself and letting go. Writing it was a release," she said.
Rosé shared how much she values encouragement. "When someone tells me, 'Chaeyoung, you’re doing great,' it reassures me that I’m on the right track." She even joked about her dad still saying, "Come back home, Rosie," reminiscing about her early days as a trainee.
Leaving her family at 16 wasn’t easy, but Rosé said her determination to debut kept her going. "I told myself, 'I have to chase this dream.' Even when I felt lonely, I couldn’t give up."
As for BLACKPINK’s future plans, Rosé gave fans something to look forward to: "Next year, we’re planning a new album and a tour. Please look forward to it!"
With her heartfelt reflections and exciting announcements, Rosé left fans eagerly anticipating her solo album and BLACKPINK’s next chapter.
