The prosecution has asked for a four-month prison sentence for a woman in her 30s who posted malicious comments targeting singer and actress IU.
On November 26th, Money Today reported that the Seoul Central District Court recently held a final hearing for "A," the defendant accused of defaming IU. During the hearing, A requested leniency, claiming, “I was only sharing my opinions. I suffer from mental illness, which affects my writing skills.”
A’s lawyer defended her by arguing, “The comments were based on factual points and expressed an opinion. While the language used may have been offensive, it does not meet the criteria for defamation.”
The investigation revealed that A had posted four defamatory comments in April 2022, criticizing IU’s clothing, singing, and public statements.
IU’s agency, EDAM Entertainment, has been taking firm action against malicious commenters. In an October update, the agency revealed they had filed lawsuits against over 180 individuals since last year. Among these, six were fined, three were conditionally suspended with education orders, and one received probation guidance.
The agency made it clear that they will not settle or show leniency toward offenders. They stated, “We will continue to take strong legal action to protect our artist. We urge everyone to stop engaging in harmful online behavior.”
In other news, IU recently wrapped up her successful 2024 IU HEREH WORLD TOUR CONCERT ENCORE: THE WINNING in Seoul.
Fans can look forward to her return as Ae Soon in the Netflix series You Have Done Well, set to premiere in early 2025.
