On November 23, BIGBANG’s leader G-Dragon took the stage at the 2024 MAMA Awards in Osaka, Japan, to accept the prestigious Music Visionary of the Year award.
But it wasn’t just his win that caught fans’ attention—it was his witty nod to lyrics he wrote a decade ago.
As he began his speech, G-Dragon said, “It’s been a while, MAMA. I see you’re setting up a big table. Sharing the awards so the kids don’t fight, how thoughtful of you.” This line, both clever and familiar, sparked buzz online.
The phrase was originally part of a diss rap G-Dragon performed at the 2014 MAMA Awards, where he criticized the “award-sharing” culture of end-of-year ceremonies.
Back then, his lyrics included:
"It’s been a while, MAMA / I see you’re setting up a big table / Sharing the awards so the kids don’t fight, how thoughtful of you / We’re all grown now, just watching is enough to feel full / So, feed the younger ones."
Fast forward 10 years, G-Dragon used those same words to open his acceptance speech, adding a nostalgic and bold touch to his special moment.
Reflecting on his journey, he said, “This feels like a very meaningful award. I first stood on the MAMA stage in 2007, and this marks my return after seven years. I’ve been with MAMA for 17 years. I’m grateful for this award, which will leave a great memory on such an important day.”
He continued by thanking the people who supported him, including YG Entertainment founder Yang Hyun Suk, his YG and Galaxy Corporation families, The Black Label team, and VIPs (BIGBANG’s fan club). He added with a smile, “I’m not sure if this is an award you can only win once, but I won’t let it slip away next year either. Thank you.”
G-Dragon’s clever throwback to his 2014 diss rap left fans reminiscing about his bold and creative legacy, proving that even after 17 years, he remains one of the most visionary figures in K-pop.
