In a recent interview, Jung Yonghwa of CNBLUE reflected on the rise of band music in the K-pop scene and opened up about his feelings after attending a 2NE1 concert.
Jung Yonghwa shared how much has changed in the music world, saying, "In the past, band music was mostly linked to metal, but now there are many different types of bands. People are starting to appreciate music more, which is exciting for us." He emphasized the importance of hard work, stating, "We’re motivated to work harder than ever."
When asked about the pressure from new junior bands, he responded, “We want to be seniors who guide the next generation. We’re still improving, taking lessons, and enjoying music. I feel like we can finally show what we can do, and the public is starting to notice us."
Jung Yonghwa expressed a mix of excitement and pressure, saying, “Honestly, I feel some pressure, but it’s not as heavy as I thought. Our experience helps us handle it.” He believes CNBLUE still has so much more to share. "We’ve only had limited chances to perform live. Now, with more opportunities on YouTube, it feels like we can finally show our true selves. I feel like I’m returning to the mindset of a rookie."
Discussing his musical aspirations, Jung Yonghwa said, “I want to keep impressing people, like someone trying to be cool for a loved one. I want to show that we’re still relevant and cool after all these years.”
Attending the 2NE1 concert was a special moment for him. “2NE1 was my favorite girl group. Hearing their songs made me tear up. It reminded me of my past and how music creates memories. I realized that we, too, can be a group that brings warmth to others." He reflected on his own debut song, saying, “I used to think ‘I’m a Lone’ held us back, but now I see that we can help people through our music."
Jung Yonghwa expressed his desire for CNBLUE to continue growing, saying, "Just seeing 2NE1 still active makes me wish for more. It inspired me to think, ‘If CNBLUE keeps going, we can also become a great group.’ We need more hit songs because having hits is important for artists."
When asked about the future of CNBLUE, he said, “I hope the band boom lasts. I want band music to be like fine wine, getting better with age. There should always be a space for older bands to shine. It’s important to create opportunities for everyone in the band scene.”
As the interview wrapped up, it was clear that Jung Yonghwa's passion for music and hope for the future of CNBLUE and band music runs deep. He looks forward to what lies ahead for him and the band, aiming to create more memorable music.
