‘You Quiz on the Block’ hits No.1 after Park Hae Soo shares how his acting once saved a high school girl
tvN's You Quiz on the Block took the No.1 spot among all cable and general programming shows in its time slot, thanks to a special episode that aired on May 14, just in time for South Korea’s Teachers’ Day.
According to Nielsen Korea, episode 293 of You Quiz on the Block, which featured a lineup of inspiring guests, earned the top viewership ratings in both Seoul and nationwide households.
Viewers were especially touched by the heartfelt stories shared by real-life educators — and by actor Park Hae Soo, who opened up about his 10-year struggle before finding fame.
Among the standout moments was Park Hae Soo’s touching story about how one of his stage performances once saved a high school girl.
The actor, now best known for his roles in Prison Playbook, Squid Game, and Yaksha: Ruthless Operations, revealed he didn’t grow up with a clear dream.
“In high school, I was a bit lost,” he said. “I traveled alone a lot.” It wasn’t until singer Lee Soo Young visited his school and introduced the theater club that he started thinking about acting.
“I didn’t start acting because I wanted to be famous,”Park shared. “I just gave it my all on stage.” For 10 years, he worked mostly in theater, staying out of the spotlight. But one performance changed his life — and someone else’s.
“A student later told me that my acting saved her,” he recalled. “That’s when I realized the power of this work.”Park also talked about how long and difficult his path was. “I didn’t think I’d ever be on the big screen,” he said.
“But I kept going. Everyone has their moment — even if it takes a long time.” His words deeply resonated with viewers, many of whom praised his perseverance and sincerity.
The episode also featured other meaningful guests, including Sogang University professor Yoo Hyun Jae, who warned about the dangers of fake news and hate online; teacher Kim Ji Hwan, who teaches students how to express emotions and love themselves; and retired principal Lee Myung Hak, who criticized Korea’s obsession with top universities.
All of their stories made the episode one of the most talked-about broadcasts of the day, but it was Park Hae Soo’s story of quiet strength and kindness that especially moved fans.
His humble attitude, emotional memories, and message of hope helped You Quiz on the Block shine — not just in ratings, but in hearts.
