Han So Hee is once again facing challenges as advertisers distance themselves following recent troubles.
On September 2, news broke that Han So Hee's mother, a woman in her 50s, was arrested for operating an illegal gambling establishment. This has stirred up more unease among brands that had already been cautious about working with Han So Hee earlier this year.
Han So Hee’s public image had already taken a hit after rumors about her relationship with actor Ryu Jun Yeol and a social media spat ignited by Hyeri’s comment.
As a result, several advertisers had pulled out, including Lotte Chilsung Beverage, NH Nonghyup Bank, and used car trading platform Hey Dealer. These companies replaced Han So Hee with new faces like Kim Ji Won, Ko Yoon Jung, and Suzy.
An advertising executive shared, “Even though Han So Hee's mother's legal issues have nothing to do with her, the noise around it makes advertisers nervous. In Korea’s Confucian culture, such issues can affect the public’s perception of a celebrity.”
Public figures like Kim Hye Soo, Jang Yoon Jung, and Park Soo Hong have managed to maintain public support despite family issues, but they still face challenges in securing major advertising deals that prioritize trust and reliability.
Another industry professional added, “Actors and singers are often judged by their successful works, which helps build a positive image. Unfortunately, recent controversies around Han So Hee, including the rumored relationship, unpredictable behavior, and her mother’s arrest, have created a negative image.”
They also noted, “For example, IU is highly favored by advertisers not just for her talent but also for her charitable work and thoughtful interactions with fans. In contrast, Han So Hee’s video reacting irritably at a Paris event has contributed to a negative perception, despite the surrounding controversies.”
