Actress Hyeri, known for her role in the girl group Girl's Day, is expressing her deep feelings about her latest film, Victory.
Released on August 14th, Victory marks Hyeri's return to the big screen after five years, following her role in The Sound of a Flower in 2019. The film, directed by Park Bum-soo, features Hyeri as Choo Pil-sun, the passionate leader of the cheerleading squad "Millennium Girls."
The film had a notable moment as the opening film at the 23rd New York Asian Film Festival, where Hyeri earned the "Screen International Rising Star Asia Award." Despite this recognition, Victory has faced disappointing box office numbers in South Korea. On August 19th, the film ranked 5th at the box office with 11,915 viewers, totaling 207,383 over its first six days. Its reservation rate remains low at 3.5%.
Hyeri has been actively promoting Victory, appearing on various variety shows and guesting on SBS Power FM's Escape at 2 PM on August 20th. During a "guerrilla stage greeting," she was moved to tears by the lack of attention the film received. She shared, "It was the first time I cried watching my own work. It’s upsetting to see the film not getting noticed. I feel a deep responsibility."
She also expressed her dedication on X (formerly Twitter), writing, "Sleep is a luxury," showing her commitment to Victory despite its lukewarm reception. On August 16th, she encouraged her followers to help promote the film, saying, "Victory is really fun, but it hasn’t been chosen much, which is a bit upsetting. How can we get it more recognition?"
Hyeri’s heartfelt responses to fan comments and her handwritten letter, shared on August 20th, have touched many. She wrote, "The emotions I’ve kept bottled up are so precious and unbelievable that they make me cry. Despite the struggles, the support I’ve received is what matters most. I will continue to hold hope and repay this feeling."
Hyeri’s openness about her disappointment highlights her dedication to Victory and her emotional connection to the film's success.
