Singer Kim Junsu recently opened up about a pivotal moment during his time with the legendary group TVXQ, shedding light on the influence of fellow powerhouse group BIGBANG.
In a candid video titled “2nd Generation Idol Summit,” released on the YouTube channel ‘Jibdaeseong,’ Junsu engaged in a heartfelt conversation with fellow artist Daesung.
Junsu began by reminiscing about TVXQ’s remarkable achievements, including their Grand Slam victory with “O-Jung.Ban.Hap,” where they clinched top honors at every award ceremony.
Riding this wave of success, the group faced a critical juncture: whether to focus more on Korea or expand their reach in Japan.
He revealed, “While we were in Japan for our schedules, ‘Lies’ suddenly exploded onto the scene. Until then, neither our members nor the company felt any pressure. But when ‘Lies’ hit, even we thought, ‘This is so cool.’ It marked the first time we wondered, ‘Have we entered the realm of BIGBANG?’”
The transition from physical albums to digital music was underway, and TVXQ’s signature style had always adhered to precise choreography.
Yet, the shock came when they realized that freer movement worked just as effectively. Junsu recalled, “We were always meticulous about matching angles in our dance routines.”
However, BIGBANG’s impact was undeniable. Junsu continued, “We sensed the urgency. While Japan was thriving, we felt our influence waning in Korea. Breaking records was no longer enough; we aimed to surpass BIGBANG. ‘Mirotic’ became our compromise—a fusion of sharp dance moves and newfound freedom.”
Reflecting on those days, Junsu mused, “Looking back, we were subconsciously aware of BIGBANG’s vibe. Sometimes simplicity carries immense weight.”
Daesung, with a smile, responded, “It’s an honor,” extending his hand for a handshake.
The encounter between these two iconic artists serves as a testament to the transformative era of second-generation idols, forever etching their impact on K-pop history.
