  • Koo Jun Yup's Legal Troubles Pile Up After Marriage to Late Barbie Hsu Is Found Not Registered—What Happens to Inheritance and Custody?

Koo Jun Yup is facing a tough situation after the sudden death of his wife, Barbie Hsu. Along with the emotional toll, Koo may now be in danger of losing both inheritance rights and custody of Barbie's children.

Reports from February 3, including from Chinese media like Yu Xiaonan, revealed that Koo and Barbie had not officially registered their marriage in Taiwan.

Although they were legally married in South Korea, they never completed the registration process in Taiwan. This has raised serious concerns about Koo’s legal rights regarding Barbie’s estate and her children.

Legal experts have pointed out that if Barbie had left a will, her assets would be distributed based on her wishes. But if there’s no will, her estate would normally be split equally between Koo and her two children.

Since Koo is neither the biological father of the children nor legally registered as Barbie’s husband in Taiwan, he risks losing both his inheritance and his right to custody of her kids.

Adding to Koo’s worries, Barbie Hsu had ongoing legal battles with her ex-husband, Wang Xiaofei. Now that Barbie has passed, it’s likely that Koo could find himself inheriting the lawsuit.

This means he could end up continuing legal proceedings against Wang Xiaofei, potentially demanding child support. However, Wang Xiaofei, a wealthy businessman with assets over 100 billion KRW (around $75 million), may fight for custody of the children.

To make matters more complicated, his mother, Zhang Lan, is very close to the kids, making a legal battle for custody almost inevitable.

Koo and Barbie’s relationship had a rocky past. They briefly dated in 1998 before breaking up. Barbie later married Wang Xiaofei in 2011 and had two children, a son and a daughter.

They divorced in 2021. After learning of Barbie’s divorce, Koo reconnected with her, and they married in 2022.

Sadly, Barbie passed away on February 2 while traveling in Japan due to acute pneumonia, leaving Koo to face these difficult legal challenges.
