• Marvel's Latest Film 'The Marvels' Fails to Impress K-netizens

The Marvels' premiered on November 8 to eager anticipation from Korean fans, who were excited about the news of actor Park Seo Joon joining the cast.

However, this excitement turned into disappointment as viewers realized that his role was only five minutes long.

Adding to the frustration, Park Seo Joon's appearance in the movie was delayed by an hour and was limited to a brief cameo in a flashback scene.

In this segment, he played the character of Yon, the prince of Atlas, who had a unique interaction with Captain Marvel through singing and dancing, as the planet of Atlas communicates primarily through music and dance.

While this scene served as a transition within the film, it fell short of the expectations of Korean fans. Later on, Yon briefly led his army into a battle against the Devan-Verse army, showcasing his sword skills on two occasions before the scene ended.

Despite these moments, Park Seo Joon's fleeting appearance disappointed many Korean netizens, who felt that "The Marvels" did not meet the usual expectations associated with a Marvel Cinematic film. Many viewers found the movie lacking in a strong and engaging plotline, leading them to question the quality of its direction.

This sentiment has led Korean netizens to express concern that Marvel may have lost its magic, reflecting on a time when the studio's movies were universally acclaimed and seemed infallible.

According to the CGV Egg Index, similar to the Rotten Tomatoes website, 'The Marvels' is not receiving a favorable reception. A Golden Egg score below 80% typically indicates a less positive response from audiences, and 'The Marvels' currently holds a rating of 74%.

South Korea is a crucial market for Marvel due to its strong box office performance and passionate fan base.

The nation's advanced technology infrastructure and high cinema attendance rates make it a lucrative platform for film releases. Korean audiences are known for their deep engagement with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, frequently resulting in impressive opening weekend numbers and sustained ticket sales.

K-netizens have commented on the movie, expressing their disappointment. Some have said, "The reviews show that it's not that good," "The Marvel cinematic universe is declining in my opinion," and "Marvel lost their magic."

Others mentioned, "I'm glad I didn't watch the movie," "I'm curious about this film because Park Seo Joon is in it," and "He only appears for like 3 minutes." There were also remarks about the trailer not being good, difficulty understanding the plot, and the need to watch the show to comprehend what's happening.

The low ratings have raised questions even among strong fans of the franchise, who wonder why the film's reception is lacking.

  • Kim Soo Hyun Cannot Be Prosecuted for Alleged Relationship with the Late Kim Sae Ron as a Minor—Lawyer Explains Why the Law Does Not Apply

Kim Soo Hyun has admitted to dating the late Kim Sae Ron but strongly denies that their relationship began when she was a minor.

On March 14, Kim Soo Hyun’s agency, Gold Medalist, released a statement saying, “Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Sae Ron dated from the summer of 2019, after she became an adult, until the fall of 2020.” They emphasized, “The claim that he was in a relationship with her when she was a minor is not true.”

The agency also clarified that the photos of the two, which were revealed by Garo Sero Research Institute (Gaseyeon) and Kim Sae Ron herself, were taken in 2020 when she was already of legal age.

Regarding the legal implications of the allegations, lawyer Lee Go Eun appeared on YTN News to discuss whether Kim Soo Hyun could face charges if it were proven that he had been in a relationship with Kim Sae Ron when she was underage.

When asked about the possibility of legal punishment, Lee explained, “Under the law revised in May 2020, any physical relationship with a minor under the age of 16, even with consent, could lead to serious charges.”

However, she pointed out a key legal detail, saying, “Before the 2020 revision, the law applied only to minors under 13 years old. Since Kim Sae Ron was 15 in 2015, the legal framework at the time does not classify her as a protected minor in this context.”

Lee concluded, “Given the laws in place at the time, it seems difficult for Kim Soo Hyun to face legal consequences.”

She further added, “For any case to proceed against him, there would need to be clear evidence of more than just dating. Based on what is currently known, holding him legally accountable may be challenging.”
