BLACKPINK’s Jisoo gets slammed again as viewers say new movie disrespects Korean history
BLACKPINK’s Jisoo is once again in hot water after a new controversy surrounding her upcoming movie Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint.
On May 12, the movie dropped its first character posters and teaser trailer. While the fantasy-action vibe and star-studded cast caught fans’ attention, it didn’t take long before criticism started rolling in—especially toward Jisoo’s character, Lee Ji Hye.
In the film, each character is powered by a legendary “constellation.” Jisoo’s character is said to get her strength from Korea’s iconic historical figure, Admiral Yi Sun sin. But fans were shocked to see her holding a gun in the teaser instead of a more traditional weapon like a sword or bow.
Many pointed out the odd choice, with one viewer saying, “Admiral Yi Sun sin was shot to death. Why would she use a gun?” Others questioned if the filmmakers even understood the source material, while some accused them of twisting Korean history just to avoid upsetting Japan.
This isn’t the first time the film’s production has been called out. Back in February, Realize Pictures CEO Won Dong Yeon addressed concerns on social media, saying changes are “sometimes needed when turning a novel into a movie.”
Meanwhile, Jisoo’s acting continues to spark debate. She was previously criticized for her performance in Coupang Play’s Influenza, and earlier in Snowdrop. With Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint, people are now questioning not just her acting, but also her portrayal of the character.
Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint is based on a popular web novel where a reader named Kim Dok Ja (played by Ahn Hyo Seop) suddenly finds the novel’s world becoming reality. He teams up with the novel’s original main character Yoo Jung Hyuk (Lee Min Ho) and other fighters, including Jisoo’s Lee Ji Hye, to survive in a collapsing world.
