  • BLACKPINK's Jennie gets emotional talking about her mom: “I just want to live happily with my mom and be a daughter she can be proud of”

BLACKPINK’s Jennie opened up about her close bond with her mom and shared a touching behind-the-scenes story from Coachella.

On the May 7 episode of tvN’s You Quiz on the Block, Jennie sat down with Yoo Jae Seok and revealed what really happened during her emotional moment on stage at Coachella. Yoo brought up how Jennie suddenly said “Mom, I love you” while performing her solo song “Starlight.”

Jennie confessed, “I promised myself I wouldn’t cry. But when I saw my mom in the crowd during the last song, I couldn’t hold it in. I just burst into tears and walked off stage. I can’t even watch the video—I’m crying so much in it.”

When asked about her heartfelt lyrics, “I just wanted to make my mom proud,” Jennie shared her true feelings. “People think what I do is always glamorous, but there are times when it’s really tough. I put pressure on myself and ask, ‘What should I do next?’ At one point, I asked myself, ‘What was my dream again?’ And the answer was simple: I just want to be happy with my mom and be a daughter she can be proud of. That’s all I really want.”

She also revealed that her mom was deeply moved that day. “I heard my mom cried while watching me. After the show, she just patted me and said, ‘You did well.’ I thought she’d be jumping with excitement, but instead, she quietly took a photo with me and left. When I came back after fixing my makeup, she was already gone,” Jennie said with a laugh.

When Yoo Jae Seok asked her to describe her mom, Jennie smiled and said, “My mom told me not to talk about her. Even the ‘Mom, I love you’ moment wasn’t planned. But so many people saw it. She said, ‘Just talk about Jennie today.’ We’re just a normal mother and daughter, but we’ve gotten a lot of attention.”

Jennie also talked about studying in New Zealand when she was just 10 years old. “Now that I’m an adult, we’ve talked about it. I think my mom wanted me to grow up in a bigger world. She stayed with me for the first two months and then went back to Korea. She says I told her not to call because I was too busy playing,” she laughed. “Even back then, I kind of knew that if I stayed in Korea, I’d have to study really hard.”

Fans are once again touched by Jennie’s honest and sweet words—and even more impressed by her deep love and respect for her mom.
